Ivory Coast Rally to Overcome Sierra Leone in AFCON Qualifier
Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire – Hervé Renard’s first official match in charge of the Ivory Coast saw the Elephants battle hard to secure a 2-1 victory over Sierra Leone in their opening 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Saturday.
The Lone Stars started brightly and troubled the hosts throughout the first half. Sierra Leone took a surprise lead just before halftime when striker Kei Kamara found the net in the 43rd minute, putting the Ivorians on the back foot.
However, the second half saw a rejuvenated Ivory Coast respond with renewed intensity, spurred on by their passionate home crowd. Newly appointed captain Yaya Touré led by example in midfield, orchestrating the comeback. The equalizer came courtesy of Seydou Doumbia, who expertly converted a precise cross from right-back Serge Aurier.
Buoyed by the momentum, the Elephants pressed for the winner and found it through Gervinho. The winger showcased his skill and composure as he dribbled past defenders before slotting home a decisive goal, securing all three points for the hosts.
Starting Lineups:
