Cameroon’s Zambo Anguissa doubtful for World Cup qualifiers after injury

Zambo Anguissa

Cameroon midfielder André-Frank Zambo Anguissa is facing the possibility of missing the Indomitable Lions’ upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Eswatini and Libya, scheduled between March 17 and 24.

The 29-year-old, who has been in strong form for Napoli this season with five goals and three assists in Serie A, suffered an injury during his side’s 2-1 defeat against Como on Sunday.

Initially left out of the starting lineup to avoid the risk of suspension due to yellow card accumulation, the former Olympique de Marseille player was introduced in the 62nd minute. However, his participation came at a cost.

Muscle Injury Confirmed

Napoli confirmed on Tuesday that Zambo Anguissa has sustained a muscle tear, specifically “a distracting lesion of the soleus muscle in his right leg.”

While the Italian club has not provided a recovery timeline, stating only that the midfielder has begun rehabilitation, La Gazzetta dello Sport has offered more clarity on the matter.

The Italian publication reports that Zambo Anguissa will miss Napoli’s crucial Serie A clash against league leaders Inter Milan on Saturday.

He is also unlikely to recover in time for fixtures against Fiorentina on March 9 and Venezia on March 16, casting serious doubt over his availability for Cameroon’s World Cup qualifiers.

Major Setback for Cameroon

If ruled out, his absence would be a significant blow for Cameroon, who are looking to solidify their position in the qualification race.

Zambo Anguissa has been a vital presence in midfield, offering both defensive stability and attacking contributions.

The Cameroonian football federation will be closely monitoring his recovery process in the coming weeks, but the Indomitable Lions may have to prepare for their upcoming matches without one of their key players.
