Cameroonian goalkeeper Fabrice Ondoa has made a significant reversal, opting to reconsider his decision to skip the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2021).
In an exclusive interview with Foot Mercato, the Indomitable Lions’ shot-stopper, Fabrice Ondoa (28 years old, 51 caps), provided insights into his poignant choice to decline participation in AFCON 2021, which was originally scheduled for January-February 2022 in Cameroon.
Ondoa cited his lack of club affiliation since July 2021, following his departure from Alavés in Spain, as the primary reason behind his initial decision.
For Ondoa, AFCON 2021 presented a moral dilemma. “AFCON 2021 is heartbreaking. I thank Cameroon nevertheless because I personally decided not to go despite Cameroon’s proposal,” he expressed. “For me, it is unacceptable that Fabrice Ondoa is at AFCON 2021 while he is without a club.
I have had several people and executives try to talk me out of it. My decision was made: I wouldn’t go. I have been in the front row before because for me a player without a club has nothing to do in the national team. I couldn’t break the rules I defended.
I had to set an example,” Ondoa emphasized, reflecting on his stance.
Interestingly, Ondoa’s decision contrasts with that of his cousin, André Onana, who, during the same period, prioritized his club commitments with Manchester United over national team duties.
Onana’s late arrival at the Indomitable Lions gathering for AFCON 2023 sparked controversy, prompting scrutiny from both fans and officials.
As Ondoa reevaluates his stance and prepares to potentially join the squad for AFCON 2021, his decision underscores the complexities and ethical considerations facing professional footballers balancing club and international commitments.
With his newfound resolve, Ondoa aims to contribute to Cameroon’s campaign, reaffirming his dedication to both his national team and the principles he holds dear.
Journaliste : Est-ce que l’on peut dire que vous avez sacrifié votre carrière en club pour la sélection là ou André Onana a plutôt fait le contraire ?
