Individual reflections on the tournament’s outcomes are surfacing, and in the case of Cameroonian striker Jérôme Ngom Mbekeli, the narrative revolves around a sense of missed opportunity. The prolific Sheriff Tiraspol forward recently conveyed his disappointment at not being part of the national squad that competed in AFCON 2023.

In a candid statement, Ngom Mbekeli disclosed his dissatisfaction with the non-inclusion in the squad, expressing a belief that his performance in the 2022 World Cup merited consideration for the subsequent continental tournament in Ivory Coast.

The 25-year-old articulated that he had invested considerable effort at the club level to capture the attention of the national team’s coach, Rigobert Song.

However, it appears his endeavors may not have registered as expected.

The Cameroonian striker remarked, “I am disappointed, of course, not to have been selected to accompany the team to the AFCON in Ivory Coast, especially since it went well in Qatar, and at the club, I gave my all to be there.

I know I could have made my modest contribution. It will be, I hope, for another time. Other players went and were able to express themselves. I respect all the decisions of the technical staff.”

While expressing disappointment, Ngom Mbekeli remains hopeful for future opportunities to contribute to the national team.

His sentiments underline the intricate dynamics and tough decisions faced by coaching staff in assembling squads for prestigious tournaments, where competition for spots is intense.
