Cameroon goalkeeper André Onana has downplayed suggestions of a strained relationship with Samuel Eto’o, insisting that his focus remains on representing his country.

Past Tensions with Eto’o

Onana’s rapport with Eto’o, president of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot), has been a subject of speculation, particularly following his fallout with former Indomitable Lions coach Rigobert Song.

The Manchester United goalkeeper has often been perceived as one of the few Cameroonian internationals unafraid to challenge Eto’o’s authority.

Despite their differences, the two share a history. Onana was nurtured at the Samuel Eto’o Academy in Cameroon before making his way to Barcelona’s renowned La Masia academy, suggesting a relationship that was once built on mutual respect.

Onana’s Reaction to AFCON 2023 Controversy

During an interview with Canal+, Onana addressed a key moment that fueled speculation about his relationship with Eto’o—his relegation to the bench at the recent AFCON tournament in favor of his cousin, Fabrice Ondoa. However, he insisted that he has moved past the issue.

“Honestly, a lot of things have happened, but today, it is behind us. The most important thing for me is the victory of my country. The country is above all.

This country has given us an identity. For this country, we are all ready to give our lives, regardless of each person’s position.”

He further acknowledged that every player has their time in the game, appearing to separate his own career from that of Eto’o.

“I am a goalkeeper. He was a striker. He has done his time, I am doing mine. Football is generational and everything has an end.”

Looking Ahead

Onana’s comments signal his intent to move forward and focus on his performances for Cameroon.

While past disagreements with Fecafoot and Eto’o have made headlines, his commitment to the national team remains unchanged.

As he continues his career at Manchester United, his role within the Indomitable Lions will be closely watched, particularly as the team rebuilds for future competitions.
