Christian Bassogog, the 28-year-old Cameroonian winger, has officially marked his return to the European football scene after seven seasons in China. Following the conclusion of his three-year tenure with Shanghai Shenhua, the Douala native has inked a deal with MKE Ankaragücü, a prominent Turkish club competing in the top tier of the country’s football league.
Having earned 44 caps for the Indomitable Lions and scoring 7 goals, Bassogog, the standout player of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, seeks to reignite his career in Europe.
Despite facing challenges and losing his place in the Cameroonian national team, this transfer to the Turkish first division offers a promising opportunity for the talented winger. His previous European stint occurred between 2015 and 2017 with AaB Aalborg in Denmark.
The choice of Ankaragücü over Gaziantep, another club expressing interest, is noteworthy as it reunites Bassogog with compatriot Achille Webo, who serves as the assistant coach for the Turkish club.
This familiar connection is anticipated to facilitate Bassogog’s adaptation and potential success in his new football environment.
The signing is for a duration of a year and a half, aligning the Cameroonian winger with Ankaragücü’s ambitions. While his participation in the upcoming match against Konyaspor this Sunday may be a bit premature, Bassogog could make his debut in the team’s colors during the subsequent fixture on February 18, as Ankaragücü hosts the legendary Galatasaray, one of Turkey’s most iconic football clubs.
