Ignatius Ganago will not return to FC Nantes for the start of the upcoming Ligue 1 season, as the Cameroonian forward’s loan spell at New England Revolution has been automatically extended under the terms of his agreement with the Major League Soccer side.
The 26-year-old striker joined the American club on loan earlier this year, with the initial deal running until July 2025. However, a clause embedded in the contract allowed for an automatic extension based on playing time—and that clause has now been triggered.
Having featured in over 50% of New England’s league matches this season, Ganago will now remain in the United States until at least December 2025.
The activation of the clause means the former OGC Nice and RC Lens player will not return to the Stade de la Beaujoire in time to work under new FC Nantes head coach Luis Castro, who recently took charge of the club. This development effectively rules Ganago out of the French side’s plans for the first half of the 2025–26 Ligue 1 campaign.
Ganago has made 15 league appearances for New England Revolution so far, contributing one goal and four assists.
While not prolific in front of goal, his all-around play and consistent involvement have been sufficient to meet the threshold required for the loan extension to take effect.
His performance has been regarded as valuable by the MLS club, who now retain his services for the remainder of the year.
Despite his extended stay in the United States, Ganago remains under contract with FC Nantes until 2027. The French club signed him in 2022, and although his time in Ligue 1 has been marked by fluctuations in form and fitness, he remains a long-term asset on their books.
His future beyond the end of 2025, however, is now likely to depend on both his performances in MLS and the strategic direction Nantes chooses under its new leadership.
The striker’s career has seen him accumulate experience across multiple top-flight leagues. He began in France with OGC Nice before making a name for himself at RC Lens, where his physical style and direct approach in attack earned him a move to Nantes. His current spell at New England Revolution marks his first venture outside European football.
For now, Ganago will continue to ply his trade in MLS, with the opportunity to establish himself further in a growing league and perhaps attract attention ahead of a possible return to Europe in the future.
In the meantime, FC Nantes will monitor his progress from afar as they reshape their squad in preparation for the new Ligue 1 season.
