Cameroon’s Minister of Sports, Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, has been formally called upon to take action against Samuel Eto’o, President of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot), amid ongoing controversy regarding alleged financial misconduct.
In a letter dated July 8, Guibai Guitama, who identifies himself as a member of Fecafoot’s Executive Committee, urged the minister to open an administrative investigation into Eto’o and apply appropriate sanctions.
The appeal follows persistent allegations surrounding a €455,000 payment that was reportedly made into Eto’o’s personal bank account, tied to the organization of a friendly match between Cameroon and Russia in October 2023.
The match, which ended 1–0 in favour of Russia, has since become the focal point of a growing scandal within Cameroonian football.
The sum in question, initially intended to facilitate the logistics of the international fixture, has prompted widespread scrutiny due to the manner in which it was handled.
Guitama’s letter expressed concern over the Ministry of Sports’ silence on the matter, questioning why no official steps have been taken despite the gravity of the allegations.
“Surprised and concerned by the silence to date of the supervisory authority that you are, it seemed to me, in the best interests of Cameroonian football, necessary to draw your high attention to the fact that such a case which reveals potential transgressive behavior of the President of Fecafoot towards sporting and ethical regulations requires, in parallel with the actions already initiated before the internal courts of Fecafoot, the opening of an administrative investigation that you will be kind enough to instruct and to sanction the offender (Eto’o),” the letter reads.
This is not the first time Guibai Guitama has taken a public stance against Eto’o. In late June, he submitted a formal complaint to Fecafoot regarding the same issue. That complaint, according to Guitama, was met with no official response.
Fecafoot, however, did issue a counteraction, filing a complaint of its own against Guitama. In its response, the federation accused him of “defamation, slander and insults,” and warned of further legal consequences for what it described as “meticulously organized and financed cabals” aimed at discrediting the leadership.
While Fecafoot has pushed back strongly against what it claims are unfounded accusations, it has notably not directly denied the financial claims at the heart of the controversy. The silence on this specific point continues to raise questions among observers and football stakeholders in Cameroon.
The unfolding dispute highlights a deepening rift within Fecafoot and broader concerns about governance and transparency in Cameroonian football.
With Eto’o still at the helm of the federation and facing increasing public scrutiny, pressure is now mounting on the Ministry of Sports to intervene and provide clarity.
As the situation develops, all eyes will be on Minister Mouelle Kombi’s next steps, which could have significant implications for the administration of football in the country and for Eto’o’s leadership at Fecafoot.
