Cameroonian midfielder Zambo Anguissa set for Napoli stay with new long-term deal

Cameroonian midfielder Zambo Anguissa set for Napoli stay with new long-term deal

André Frank Zambo Anguissa will not proceed with the previously anticipated two-year contract extension at Napoli, as the club now moves forward with a revised offer that ties the Cameroonian international to the Italian side until 2029.

Initial reports had pointed towards a two-year renewal for the 28-year-old midfielder, which would have kept him at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium until 2027.

However, according to Italian outlets Il Mattino and Tuttomercatoweb, the situation has shifted significantly, with Napoli opting to propose a longer-term agreement that reflects Anguissa’s importance to the squad.

Under this new contract, the former Fulham and Marseille man is expected to remain in Naples for the next four seasons, with the revised deal running through to June 2029. This development effectively shuts the door on a potential summer exit, despite interest from several clubs abroad.

Turkish giants Fenerbahce and Besiktas, as well as Saudi Pro League side Al-Qadsiyah, had all expressed interest in luring Anguissa away from Serie A.

The midfielder’s performances during the 2023–24 campaign, in which he made 37 appearances and contributed six goals and five assists, had not gone unnoticed across Europe and beyond.

Anguissa, who joined Napoli permanently in 2022 following a successful loan spell from Fulham, has become a central figure in the club’s midfield.

Known for his ball-winning abilities, composure under pressure, and tireless work rate, the Cameroonian has played a pivotal role in Napoli’s recent campaigns, including their historic Scudetto win in 2023.

The decision to offer a four-year deal signals Napoli’s clear intention to build around core players like Anguissa as they look to re-establish themselves as title contenders in Serie A.

Despite a more turbulent season following their championship triumph, the club views the retention of experienced and reliable players as critical to their ambitions under the leadership of new manager Antonio Conte.

Anguissa’s value in the transfer market continues to rise, but Napoli have shown they are not easily tempted by foreign interest, particularly when it involves a player so integral to the team’s engine room.

The fresh agreement not only rewards the midfielder’s consistency but also reinforces the club’s long-term strategy ahead of the new season.

Though Napoli has not yet officially confirmed the extension, the shift from a short-term to a longer-term deal all but guarantees Anguissa’s presence in their squad for the foreseeable future.

As the club prepares for both domestic and European campaigns, retaining a player of his calibre will be seen as a significant victory.

With transfer speculation now likely to ease, all eyes will turn to Anguissa’s performance on the pitch as Napoli aims to rebound from a disappointing season and recapture the momentum that carried them to the top of Italian football just two years ago.
