Cameroonian midfielder Martin Hongla is set to make a triumphant return to Spain as he rejoins one of his former clubs, Granada FC. The 25-year-old has inked a three-and-a-half-season deal with the Spanish side after parting ways with Hellas Verona.
Martin Hongla’s future with Hellas Verona became uncertain, prompting the midfielder to seek fresh opportunities elsewhere. Granada, one of Hongla’s initial European clubs, swiftly expressed interest in bringing him back.
Negotiations ensued, resulting in an agreement between the concerned parties. The Cameroonian midfielder has now officially signed a contract with Granada, securing his services until June 2027.
This move marks a homecoming for Martin Hongla, who first donned the Rojiblanco colors during the 2016/2017 season. His football journey subsequently took him to FC Barcelona B on loan in January 2018.
Although he initially returned to Granada for the following season, Hongla opted for a loan spell at Ukrainian club Karpaty during the winter transfer window. In the 2019-20 season, he joined Royal Antwerp, and two years later, he was loaned to Hellas Verona.
After a temporary stint at Real Valladolid, he returned to Hellas Verona last season. Prior to his latest move to Granada, Martin Hongla made 17 official appearances for Hellas Verona this season.
Having earned 22 caps for the Cameroon national team, Martin Hongla played a crucial role in the Indomitable Lions’ journey to the final phase of the last World Cup. Notably, he is among the notable absentees from Cameroon’s squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023.
