Manchester United’s pursuit of Cameroonian international Carlos Baleba has ended in disappointment, with Brighton refusing to sanction the midfielder’s departure this summer.
The Red Devils had held discussions through intermediaries before making direct contact with Brighton, but the Premier League side made their stance clear: Baleba is not for sale.
Reports suggest the Seagulls would only consider parting ways with the 21-year-old if United tabled an extraordinary bid of £115 million (€133 million), a figure far above what United were prepared to spend in this transfer window.
United, who have already committed significant funds to secure new reinforcements including Bryan Mbeumo, were unwilling to match Brighton’s demands.
As a result, the Old Trafford hierarchy has ended their interest in Baleba, leaving the Cameroonian midfielder to continue his development on the south coast.
Former Cameroonian internationals have expressed differing opinions on the saga. Jean II Makoun described Manchester United as “an ideal club” for Baleba, underlining his belief that the young midfielder has the qualities to succeed at the very highest level.
Similarly, Eric Djemba-Djemba voiced approval for the move, believing Old Trafford would have been a strong platform for the player to showcase his talent.
Despite his admiration for the potential transfer, Baleba himself has accepted Brighton’s position. While he was reportedly open to the prospect of a switch to Manchester, he remains content at the Amex Stadium and committed to his role under Roberto De Zerbi.
Baleba joined Brighton from Lille (LOSC) and has quickly become a valued member of the squad, admired for his composure on the ball and his tactical discipline in midfield.
His current deal with the club runs until 2028, with the option of a further year. That contract security, combined with his growing importance to Brighton’s long-term plans, has only strengthened the club’s resolve to keep him.
Market estimates place his value at around €40 million, but Brighton’s £115 million valuation reflects their reluctance to lose a player they regard as central to their future. For Baleba, the decision provides continuity at a club where he continues to progress, with regular opportunities to feature in one of the most competitive leagues in the world.
Financially, the 21-year-old enjoys a secure contract in England, earning an annual salary of €775,744. His focus now remains on further establishing himself in Brighton’s midfield, with the aim of continuing to attract interest from Europe’s elite clubs in the seasons ahead.
For Manchester United, the collapse of the move signals the end of one of their most high-profile pursuits of the summer. Attention at Old Trafford will now turn to consolidating the signings already made and ensuring Ruben Amorim has the squad depth needed for the challenges ahead.
While Baleba’s move to Old Trafford may be on hold, the midfielder’s performances will continue to be closely monitored, with many believing it is only a matter of time before another opportunity arises for the Cameroonian to make the step up to one of Europe’s traditional giants.
