Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana sparks speculation over future with ambiguous comments

Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana has been ruled out of Manchester United’s upcoming pre-season matches in the United States after sustaining a hamstring injury during training.

The 29-year-old is responding well to initial treatment and will still travel with the squad to the U.S. for the Premier League Summer Series later this month. However, his focus will be on recovery rather than game time.

In Onana’s absence, 27-year-old Altay Bayindir is expected to step into the starting role during the pre-season. Bayindir’s future at Old Trafford had been uncertain, especially after he was overlooked for the Europa League final in May despite Onana’s own patchy form.

It remains unclear whether United will now consider entering the transfer market for another goalkeeper. There had been rumours at the end of last season that the club might look for alternatives. However, head coach Ruben Amorim has backed Onana, who returned to pre-season camp aiming to retain his spot as the club’s No.1 despite a string of high-profile errors since his £47.2 million move from Inter Milan in 2023.

Veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton, 39, has signed a one-year contract extension to remain at the club. Meanwhile, United’s younger goalkeeping options include Czech prospect Radek Vitek, 21, who spent last season on loan at Austrian club FC Blau-Weiss Linz, as well as Elyh Harrison (19) and Dermot Mee (22).

All three were included on the bench toward the end of last season, though none have yet featured in a senior match.

Manchester United will play their first pre-season match against Leeds in Stockholm on 19 July.
