André Onana has resumed full training following a recent injury layoff, with the Manchester United goalkeeper on track to make his return before the conclusion of the club’s pre-season tour in Chicago.

The 28-year-old Cameroonian, who was sidelined for several days, is now making steady progress in his recovery. According to journalist Rob Dawson, Onana’s rehabilitation has gone according to plan, raising optimism within the United camp that he will be fit in time for their opening Premier League clash against Arsenal.

Onana’s return to the training ground is a timely boost for manager Erik ten Hag, who will be looking to count on his first-choice goalkeeper as the club gears up for another demanding campaign.

The keeper’s presence is considered integral to United’s tactical approach, with his confidence on the ball and command of the area offering a foundation for the team’s defensive organisation.

The former Inter Milan and Ajax shot-stopper signed for Manchester United in the summer of 2023, taking over from long-time number one David de Gea. Since his arrival, Onana has retained his role as the club’s starting goalkeeper and remains under contract at Old Trafford until June 2028.

Despite early challenges in adapting to the Premier League, the Cameroonian international has continued to show signs of development and consistency in his performances.

Valued at €25 million, Onana remains one of the most high-profile African goalkeepers in European football. He is expected to play a key role this season, as United aim to improve upon last year’s domestic and European campaigns.

With a return to full fitness now within reach, he will need to demonstrate his full capabilities to solidify his status as a long-term fixture in the team.

Off the pitch, Onana’s professional journey has been marked by determination and resilience. Born in Nkol Ngok, Cameroon, he began his football education at the Samuel Eto’o Academy before moving to Spain to join Barcelona’s youth ranks.

It was at Ajax, however, where he rose to prominence, establishing himself as one of Europe’s most reliable goalkeepers. His performances in the Champions League and Dutch Eredivisie earned him a move to Serie A with Inter Milan, and later, to England with Manchester United.

Currently earning an annual salary of €7.3 million, Onana’s contract at United places him among the club’s higher earners, underscoring the club’s belief in his value and potential. With the new season approaching, pressure will mount for him to justify that investment and deliver consistent performances at the highest level.

As Manchester United continue their preparations in the United States, all eyes will be on Onana’s fitness and readiness to return to competitive action.

His availability for the Premier League opener against Arsenal could prove crucial as the Red Devils seek a strong start to the 2025–26 campaign.

For now, his return to training marks a positive step forward as both club and player set their sights on the challenges ahead.
