Bayer Leverkusen have confirmed the signing of rising Cameroonian star Christian Kofane in a €5 million deal from Spanish outfit Albacete.
The 20-year-old striker has signed a four-year contract with the Bundesliga club, committing his future to Leverkusen until 2028.
The transfer marks a swift ascent for Kofane, who only made his professional debut six months ago but quickly earned attention across Europe for his performances in Spain’s Segunda División.
Under the guidance of Erik ten Hag, Leverkusen moved decisively to acquire the promising attacker, fending off interest from several major European clubs.
According to German publication Kicker, Kofane had been on the radar of Benfica, FC Porto, AS Monaco, and even Spanish giants Real Madrid following an impressive start to his senior career.
“Christian is an extremely strong and fast striker, technically gifted and with great tenacity,” said Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes.
“His qualities will bring even more variety to our game, and he has the potential to become a key part of the team in the coming years.”
Kofane made an instant impact at Albacete, scoring eight goals in the second half of the 2024/25 season — a remarkable return for a player adapting to European football for the first time.
His rapid development convinced Leverkusen’s scouting department of his readiness to compete at a higher level, and the club wasted little time securing the transfer.
Speaking after the deal was finalised, Kofane expressed both surprise and pride at his meteoric rise. “It’s incredible that after such a short time in Europe, I’m already playing for a Champions League team,” he said. “I will do everything I can to seize this opportunity.
At Bayer, there are many examples of young players who have achieved great things here.”
The Cameroonian’s blend of pace, physical strength, and clinical finishing has drawn comparisons to some of the continent’s top emerging talents.
His ability to operate across the front line offers Erik ten Hag additional tactical flexibility as Leverkusen prepare for a season that includes both domestic competition and Champions League football.
The transfer also represents a significant financial move for Albacete, who had only just integrated Kofane into their squad.
The €5 million fee underscores the value placed on the forward’s potential, as well as the confidence Leverkusen have in his capacity to develop into a top-level performer.
Kofane joins a Leverkusen side known for its focus on youth development and attacking football. With a manager experienced in nurturing talent and a squad built around high-intensity, dynamic play, the young Cameroonian will find himself in an environment conducive to growth.
As pre-season begins, attention will turn to how quickly Kofane can adapt to the demands of the Bundesliga. While competition for places will be fierce, his early career suggests a player ready to rise to the challenge.
For both Bayer Leverkusen and Christian Kofane, this transfer signals the start of an exciting new chapter.
