Despite securing qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, Cameroon’s national team remains embroiled in a tense internal conflict.
Former Indomitable Lions captain Benjamin Moukandjo has now spoken out, calling for calm and unity as the nation prepares for the continental tournament.
The controversy stems from the appointment of head coach Marc Brys, who was named to the position by Cameroon’s Minister of Sports without the endorsement of the country’s football federation, Fécafoot, which is led by Samuel Eto’o.
This decision has deepened divisions within Cameroonian football, with ongoing disputes overshadowing the team’s success on the pitch.
Speaking on RFI’s Radio Foot Internationale, Moukandjo, now a football analyst for beIN Sports, voiced his concerns about the ongoing tensions and their potential impact on the squad’s preparations for AFCON.
“I faced similar issues in 2014, but we managed to qualify,” he recalled. “However, once the competition started, things didn’t go as planned.
That’s why I strongly believe that before this AFCON arrives, we must resolve these problems so that everyone can move in the same direction.”
Moukandjo’s remarks reflect growing unease within Cameroonian football circles, with fears that persistent disputes between the government and Fécafoot could disrupt the team’s focus and performance at the tournament.
With AFCON fast approaching, the former captain’s call for unity serves as a stark reminder of the importance of stability and cohesion in achieving success on the international stage.
