Cameroon, Tunisia, Algeria, Ghana, and Mali Emerge as Dark Horses in Upcoming AFCON

CAN 2023 750x422 1

As anticipation mounts for the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON), the spotlight not only shines on the tournament favorites but also on the formidable dark horses aiming to defy expectations. Among the contenders are Cameroon, Tunisia, Algeria, Ghana, and Mali, each with a distinct mission in mind as they enter the competition.

Cameroon: Aiming for Redemption

Cameroon, a five-time African champion and third-placed in the previous AFCON, is set on securing victory on familiar turf.

Rigobert Song’s squad, led by goalkeeper André Onana, midfielder André Franck Zambo Anguissa, and striker Vincent Aboubakar, is fueled by the desire to redeem their home turf after a disappointing performance in the last edition.

Tunisia: Seeking Culmination of Consistent Performances

Tunisia, crowned African champions in 2004, has been a consistent force in recent years, reaching at least the quarter-finals in the past four editions, including a semi-final appearance in 2019. The Eagles of Carthage, featuring a mature generation with players like Wahbi Khazri, Youssef Msakni, Ellyes Skhiri, and Aïssa Laidouni, view this edition as a golden opportunity to culminate their consistent performances.

Ghana: Ayew Brothers Eyeing Elusive Title

Ghana, despite boasting the third-highest number of AFCON trophies, last claimed victory in 1982. The Ayew brothers, from Abédi to André, aim to break the longstanding curse and secure the title for Ghana. As the Black Stars gear up for another attempt, the team is determined to make the most of this opportunity and end the Ayew family’s quest for AFCON glory.

Mali: Talented Squad Ready to Play Spoilsport

Mali, yet to clinch an AFCON title, enters the competition with a roster of talented players. Despite falling short in previous campaigns, the Eagles of Mali, captained by Hamari Traoré and featuring midfielder Yves Bissouma, are poised to challenge the status quo.

Surrounded by promising young talents like Mohamed Camara and Kamory Doumbia, Mali is prepared to play spoilsport for the more fancied teams.

   Algeria: Resilient Fennecs Eyeing Redemption

Algeria, the 2019 AFCON champions, endured an unexpected group stage exit in the last edition.

Djamel Belmadi’s side has regrouped and demonstrated resilience, boasting an eight-match unbeaten streak. With a rejuvenated squad including dual nationals like Farès Chaibi, Amine Gouiri, Mohamed Amoura, and Houssem Aouar, the Fennecs are determined to showcase their renewed strength and go the distance in the tournament.

As the AFCON draws near, the focus extends beyond the traditional powerhouses, highlighting the potential of these dark horse teams to create waves and leave an indelible mark on African football.
