Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) president Samuel Eto’o has issued a firm warning to national team coach Marc Brys, reaffirming his authority in the ongoing standoff between the two.
Speaking in an interview on Canal+ Afrique, Eto’o made it clear that, despite tensions, he remains the ultimate decision-maker in Cameroonian football.
The strained relationship between Eto’o and Brys has been a source of controversy in recent months, with communication issues and conflicting statements heightening the discord.
The Belgian coach, appointed under unusual circumstances, has struggled to find common ground with the federation’s leadership.
Despite the friction, Eto’o struck a diplomatic tone, acknowledging the complexities of Brys’ arrival while emphasizing his own role in overseeing Cameroon’s football affairs. “I understand Marc Brys.
He was brought in by a group that presented him with a particular situation. He may not have had the necessary perspective,” Eto’o said.
However, the former Indomitable Lions captain left no doubt about where the authority lies. “As I told him in a conversation, I will be the last one off your boat, because the signature is mine.
I hope he understood the meaning of that sentence,” he added, underscoring that Brys must align with FECAFOOT’s direction.
The tension comes at a crucial time for Cameroon, who are in the midst of their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.
Players, including captain Vincent Aboubakar, have urged both parties to set aside their differences to ensure stability within the squad.
Aboubakar and his teammates publicly appealed for reconciliation, hoping to restore focus ahead of their upcoming matches.
With Cameroon preparing to face Libya, one key issue remains unresolved—whether Brys will be permitted to have his assistant, Joachim Mununga, on the bench.
This decision could serve as an indicator of whether Eto’o is willing to soften his stance following the players’ intervention.
For now, Eto’o’s remarks reaffirm his control, making it clear that the coach must operate within the federation’s framework.
Whether this assertion of authority brings stability or further escalates tensions remains to be seen.
