Cameroon are being lined up for a potential international friendly against Egypt this June, in what would mark a significant test for the Indomitable Lions ahead of upcoming competitive fixtures.
As preparations intensify for the next international window, which is just over two months away, the Egyptian Football Association is reportedly considering a clash with Cameroon as part of its schedule.
According to reports from Onze Masr, a trusted source on Egyptian football, the seven-time African champions are weighing their options between Cameroon and South Korea as potential opponents.
If confirmed, the match would reignite one of Africa’s most historic rivalries. Egypt and Cameroon have clashed 18 times in the modern era, with the Pharaohs boasting a clear upper hand.
The North African giants have emerged victorious in 10 of those encounters, with four matches ending in draws and just four wins registered by Cameroon.
The most recent meeting between the two sides came during the semi-finals of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, which was hosted by Cameroon in early 2022.
The match ended goalless after extra time in Yaoundé, before Egypt triumphed in a dramatic penalty shootout, converting three spot-kicks to Cameroon’s solitary effort.
That defeat marked yet another chapter in what has become a recurring theme for the West African powerhouse—falling short against Egypt when it matters most.
Historical records reveal a particularly dismal trend for Cameroon in non-competitive fixtures against Egypt. Since 1984, the Indomitable Lions have failed to win any of their five friendly encounters with the Pharaohs.
The tally includes four defeats and a single draw, highlighting a longstanding struggle to overcome the North Africans outside of tournament settings.
The last friendly meeting between the two came over a decade ago, on May 20, 2012. That game saw Egypt edge out Cameroon 2-1 in a closely contested encounter.
Ahmed Elmohamady opened the scoring for Egypt in the 41st minute, before Bertin Ebanga equalised from the penalty spot midway through the second half.
However, Mohamed Aboutrika restored Egypt’s lead with a penalty conversion in the 80th minute, securing victory in Cairo.
For Cameroon, a prospective meeting with Egypt would not only serve as valuable preparation for their World Cup qualifiers but also offer a chance to address their longstanding struggles against their North African rivals.
With a new generation of talent emerging under the stewardship of the national team’s technical staff, the fixture could provide a barometer of the team’s progress.
Meanwhile, Egypt are also seeking to fine-tune their squad following recent performances in continental competition.
Head coach Rui Vitória is expected to use the June friendlies to assess his squad depth and tactical options as the Pharaohs look to maintain their dominance on the African scene.
While official confirmation from either federation is still pending, discussions appear to be progressing, and a formal announcement is anticipated in the coming weeks.
Should the fixture be finalised, it will undoubtedly draw significant attention from fans and pundits alike, with both nations carrying a rich legacy and a fierce competitive spirit into the encounter.
