Cameroon midfielder Carlos Baleba keeps Manchester United dream alive
Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba has not given up on his ambition of playing for Manchester United, with hopes of sealing a move in 2026 still alive.
The 21-year-old, who represents Cameroon internationally, was a major target for United during the summer transfer window. However, negotiations stalled after Brighton made it clear they would only entertain offers in excess of £100 million, a figure the Old Trafford hierarchy considered excessive.
Despite the collapse of the deal, Baleba’s interest in the move has not waned. According to The Athletic, the midfielder had already agreed personal terms with United, underlining his desire to switch to Ruben Amorim’s side.
Club officials at United were reportedly impressed with his willingness to commit even though the club will not feature in European competition this season.
Baleba, however, avoided forcing through the transfer by respecting Brighton’s stance.
The south coast club view him as a key part of their long-term project after signing him from Lille in 2023, and his composure on the ball combined with his athleticism has made him one of the most highly-rated young midfielders in the Premier League.
Sources indicate that the Cameroon international remains “open” to joining United in either January or June next year, depending on Brighton’s readiness to negotiate.
For now, he continues to focus on his performances for Fabian Hurzeler’s side, but the long-term pull of Old Trafford is one he has not hidden.
