AFCON 2015: Carlos Kameni Reacts Graciously to Cameroon Snub
Despite his solid performances in La Liga with Málaga, Idriss Carlos Kameni has been left out of Cameroon’s squad for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, a surprising decision by coach Volker Finke. While some exclusions were expected — such as Alex Song and Assou-Ekotto — Kameni’s absence raised eyebrows given his form and experience.
However, the veteran goalkeeper has responded with dignity and support. Speaking while on vacation in Cameroon where he was organizing a tournament, Kameni made it clear that he holds no bitterness toward the coach or the team:
“There is a coach who is responsible for choosing the best players to bring into the competition. For him, he thought that being in the competition, I was no better than those he chose. You have to accept that.”
Kameni emphasized his continued support for the national team:
“I remain a supporter of the Indomitable Lions. All I can wish for my younger brothers is success and lots of luck. I hope they do very well during this AFCON, if possible bring it home.”
Cameroon will begin their AFCON campaign on January 17, 2015, in a challenging Group D alongside Ivory Coast, Mali, and Guinea.
