Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is targeting a return to action by the end of the club’s pre-season tour of the United States, after suffering a hamstring injury during the first week of training.
The Cameroonian sustained the setback last weekend, delivering an early blow to new manager Ruben Amorim’s preparations for the 2025/26 season.
Onana’s absence immediately raised concerns about United’s goalkeeping depth, with questions emerging over whether the club might need to dip into the transfer market for reinforcements or rely on Tom Heaton and Altay Bayindir for cover.
Despite a difficult first season at Old Trafford marked by notable errors against Nottingham Forest, Viktoria Plzen, and Lyon, Onana remains Amorim’s preferred choice in goal.
The Portuguese manager is reportedly backing the 29-year-old to come good and lead from the back as he reshapes the squad.
Encouragingly for United, Onana is said to be progressing well in his recovery and could be available for the final pre-season fixture against Everton in Atlanta.
Before that, United are set to face Leeds United, West Ham United, and Bournemouth.
Bayindir is expected to see the bulk of the minutes during the US tour, and his performances could influence selection decisions heading into the Premier League opener against Arsenal in mid-August.
While speculation has circulated about Onana’s future following a turbulent debut campaign, sources close to the player insist he is not seeking a move away and remains committed to staying unless the club decides otherwise.
Amorim, however, is focused on reinforcing other areas of the squad—particularly in midfield and attack—which were seen as United’s weakest departments last term.
United are hopeful Onana’s recovery will be complete in time to resume full training in the coming weeks.
