Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana has disclosed that both Arsenal and Chelsea approached him before he eventually signed for the Red Devils.
The Cameroonian shot-stopper, who made a name for himself at Ajax, was on the radar of several top clubs before joining United. While his move to Old Trafford materialized in 2023, Onana admitted that he had multiple options over the years.
The 28-year-old revealed that several teams, including clubs from France and Spain, were interested in his services.
“I had Monaco, I had Nice, I had Atletico de Madrid, I had Chelsea, Arsenal,” he told Le Media Carré.
After arriving at United, Onana was immediately handed the No.1 spot, replacing long-time goalkeeper David de Gea.
However, his debut season has been filled with inconsistency, leading to questions over his long-term future at the club.
Recent reports have linked him with a potential move to the Saudi Pro League, but Onana is reportedly determined to stay at United and fight for his position, which is under threat from Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayındır.
Onana also opened up about the intense scrutiny that comes with playing for a club of United’s stature, admitting that the highs and lows can be overwhelming.
“The exposure. When it goes well you are on a cloud, when it goes badly you are lower than that. That is why it’s important to find the right balance,” he said.
