Cameroon Coach Volker Finke Faces Defensive Dilemma Ahead of AFCON Opener
As the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations approaches, Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions are dealing with significant defensive issues. Coach Volker Finke has expressed deep concern over the fitness and availability of key defenders just days before their first match against Mali.
❌ Stephane Mbia Suspended
Captain Stephane Mbia is ruled out of the opening match due to a red card received during the final round of qualifiers against Ivory Coast. His absence is a significant blow to Finke’s rebuilding squad.
🩹 Nkoulou Doubtful
Adding to Finke’s worries, Nicolas Nkoulou is also a doubt. The Olympique de Marseille center-back trained lightly on Tuesday with a bandaged left knee and later applied an ice pack, raising concerns over his match readiness.
“With Nicolas Nkoulou’s knee, which is a bit uncertain, we always have to be careful,” said Finke. “In a tournament with matches every three days, it’s going to be tough.”
🦶 Matip Officially Out
Finke also confirmed that Joël Matip will not be available, due to a foot fracture. The Schalke defender is still recovering from surgery and hasn’t returned to full fitness.
🧱 Chedjou Recalled
In response to the growing crisis, Aurelien Chedjou has been recalled to the squad. The Galatasaray defender, who had been out of the national team setup for six months, is being brought back for his experience and form at club level.
“I don’t want to talk about bans right now,” Finke added. “Any player who has been out but performs well at club level is welcome to return.”
With Cameroon set to face Mali in their Group D opener, Finke’s challenge will be to quickly stabilize his defensive line amidst uncertainty. The defensive backbone that once gave the Indomitable Lions their fearsome reputation is now being rebuilt under pressure.
