Cameroon’s national team will compete in the second edition of the Africa Week 2025 tournament, set to take place in Marrakech, Morocco from 2 to 10 June.
The confirmation came through a letter from Isaac Noé Mandong, Secretary General of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot), addressed to McSport, the event’s organizing body.
In the correspondence dated 25 April, Fecafoot formally approved the Indomitable Lions’ participation in the upcoming friendly competition.
Responding directly to the invitation, Mandong stated: “By correspondence, you are requesting the participation of the Cameroon national men’s team in the 2nd edition of Africa Week 2025 which will take place from June 2 to 10, 2025, in Marrakech (Morocco).
Following this, I have the honor to inform you that I express my favorable opinion for the participation of the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in this event.”
The Africa Week tournament, aimed at promoting African football and strengthening intercontinental ties through friendly competition, will feature several national teams.
Cameroon will be joined by three other African sides, with Equatorial Guinea, Chad and Burundi reportedly among the participants that have also confirmed their involvement.
While the decision adds an international fixture to Cameroon’s calendar, it has also sparked criticism from some within the country’s football circles. Marlène Emvoutou, the former regional president of football in the South of Cameroon, has publicly voiced dissatisfaction over what she perceives as a lack of ambition in securing high-profile opponents for the national side.
Expressing her frustration with Fecafoot president Samuel Eto’o, Emvoutou remarked, “We were waiting for Eto’o to bring back tournaments where we see teams from Italy and England coming to Cameroon… But when has there been a prestigious event with stars in Cameroon since Eto’o has been here?”
Her comments reflect growing concerns among certain sections of the football community who had hoped Eto’o’s leadership would result in greater international exposure and higher-calibre competition for the Indomitable Lions.
Critics argue that while regional tournaments like Africa Week offer valuable match experience, they fall short of delivering the kind of marquee matchups that could boost Cameroon’s global football profile.
Despite the criticism, the Cameroon Football Federation remains committed to fostering opportunities for the national team to develop through competitive action.
Participation in the Morocco-based tournament is expected to serve as both preparation for future qualifiers and a chance to evaluate emerging talent within the squad.
Africa Week 2025 will serve as a stage for Cameroon to test itself against fellow continental sides in a relaxed yet competitive setting, potentially helping head coach and staff refine strategies ahead of more high-stakes engagements later in the year.
As the tournament approaches, all eyes will be on the Indomitable Lions’ squad selection and performance in Marrakech — a city that will once again host a regional football showcase aimed at building continental unity through sport.
