Cameroon coach David Pagou gives reasons for home-based players' training camp

Head coach of Cameroon, David Pagou has emphasized that the ongoing training camp in Yaoundé represents a major opportunity for locally based players to stake their claim for a place in the national setup.

The gathering, which began on March 6, has brought together 30 players drawn exclusively from Cameroon’s domestic league.

According toPagou, the camp is designed to closely assess the abilities of these players while offering them a platform to prove they are capable of competing at the highest level with the Indomitable Lions.

Speaking about the initiative, the coach stressed that the camp is not only about immediate selection but also about strengthening the future of the national team through healthy competition and broader talent identification.

He explained that the technical team wants players in the local league to understand that their performances are being closely monitored and that opportunities remain open for those who consistently excel.

“The aim of this training camp is to let all the players who play in our local league know that they are being watched and that everyone can express their talent,” the coach said.

The training sessions in Yaoundé are also expected to influence upcoming squad selections, particularly with major international competitions on the horizon. Performances during the camp could determine which players are included in future national team call-ups.

With tournaments such as the Africa Cup of Nations and qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup approaching, competition for places in the national squad is expected to intensify.

The coach added that the current camp is part of a broader strategy to build on the foundation established during the last AFCON campaign. While the team already has a core group of established players, the technical staff believes the national setup must remain open to fresh talent capable of strengthening the squad.

During the most recent AFCON tournament, the Indomitable Lions identified several reliable performers, but the technical bench is eager to expand the pool and encourage greater competition within the team.

By creating an environment where local talents can challenge for national recognition, the coaching staff hopes to foster motivation among domestic league players and ensure that everyone feels involved in the mission of advancing Cameroonian football.

For many of the players attending the camp, the opportunity could prove life-changing. Impressing the technical team in Yaoundé could bring them one step closer to wearing the famous green, red and yellow jersey and representing Cameroon on the international stage.
