Samuel Eto’o Fils has relinquished the captaincy of the Cameroonian football team, with Nicolas Nkoulou now assuming the role. The decision was made by coach Denis Lavagne during the Indomitable Lions’ training camp in Dakar. The Marseille Olympic defender, Nkoulou, aged 22 with 34 caps, succeeds Eto’o, who declined the staff’s summons despite the end of his eight-month suspension.
The appointment of Nkoulou as captain was a strategic choice made in front of the technical staff and the squad, highlighting the player’s exemplary nature and consistency. With the upcoming preparations for the African Cup of Nations qualifiers against Cape Verde for South Africa 2013, Nkoulou, serving as the intermediary between the coach and players, will bear the responsibility of leading the team.
Notably, Nkoulou had previously assumed the role of interim captain in the absence of both Samuel Eto’o and Idriss Carlo Kameni due to suspensions. In this leadership role, he will be supported by Malaga’s goalkeeper and FC Barcelona’s Alexandre Song, who hold the positions of first and second vice-captains, respectively.
