Cameroon aiming for first-ever victory against Namibia in AFCON qualifier

Cameroon will be eager to extend their unbeaten run under head coach Marc Brys when they take on Namibia in a crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier. The Indomitable Lions will host the Warriors at the Japoma Stadium on Saturday, September 7, with kick-off scheduled for 6 p.m. CAT (SA, GMT+2).

The Belgian coach, Brys, was appointed under somewhat challenging circumstances, taking over from Rigobert Song earlier this year.

His relationship with the president of the Cameroonian Football Federation, Samuel Eto’o, has been rocky, adding pressure to his tenure.

However, Brys has made a promising start to his role with Cameroon, securing a dominant 4-1 win against Cape Verde and a 1-1 draw against Angola in June.

These results have kept Cameroon atop Group D in the race to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

This upcoming fixture presents Brys and his squad with a key opportunity to build on their positive form and strengthen their position in the qualification process for the 2025 AFCON.

Cameroon are aiming to bounce back after a less-than-ideal performance in the 2023 AFCON, where they were eliminated in the round of 16 under the leadership of Rigobert Song.

Song, who led the team through a difficult campaign in Ivory Coast, was dismissed in February after securing only one win from four matches in the tournament.

Namibia, on the other hand, have proven themselves to be formidable opponents, despite being considered underdogs in their AFCON campaign.

The Warriors defied expectations by advancing from a challenging Group E in AFCON 2023, which featured tough teams such as Tunisia, Mali, and South Africa.

Their progress came as a result of finishing as one of the best third-placed teams, though they were ultimately eliminated in the knockout stages by their regional rivals, Angola, who inflicted a 3-0 defeat.

Collin Benjamin’s Namibian side now look to make an impact in the ongoing qualifiers.

They are currently positioned second in their 2026 World Cup qualifying group, two points behind Tunisia.

Namibia have managed to stay unbeaten in the campaign so far, following back-to-back draws with Liberia and Tunisia.

This solid start will give the Warriors confidence as they head into the clash against Cameroon, though they have never beaten the Central African giants in previous encounters.

Cameroon, with their rich footballing pedigree and current form, will be favourites going into this match, but Namibia’s resilience and determination should not be underestimated.

The match promises to be a hard-fought contest as both teams look to take a significant step toward securing their place in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
