Calls for sports sector reforms in Senegal to boost youth employment
The Senegalese government has been urged to reform the sports sector to unlock its potential as a driver of economic growth and job creation for young people. Malick Diouf, CEO of Prim’s, made the call during the opening ceremony of the second edition of the Dakar Sport Summit, emphasizing the integral role sports can play in economic development.
Highlighting the intersection of sports and the economy, Diouf described the sector as a transversal activity that connects multiple industries.
He stressed the need for Senegal to leverage its sports ecosystem in the global economic context, where sports have increasingly become a significant contributor to job creation and income generation.
A Strategic Approach to Economic Opportunities
Speaking at the three-day event, Diouf called on the state, international donors, and private investors to collaborate in crafting strategies that direct Senegalese youth towards opportunities in sports.
He encouraged expanding the focus beyond traditional fields like agriculture to include sports as a viable economic sector.
“Sport is more than just a game; it is an economic powerhouse that spans various sectors, offering immense potential for job creation,” Diouf stated.
He emphasized that unlocking these opportunities requires deliberate policy reforms and strategic investments to make the sports sector more inclusive and economically productive.
Enhancing Senegal’s Sports Ecosystem
The Dakar Sport Summit aims to foster dialogue and innovation within Senegal’s sports ecosystem, creating a platform for stakeholders to explore economic and digital solutions in the field.
The event, which brings together experts, policymakers, and industry leaders, is dedicated to identifying actionable steps to advance sports development in the country.
Diouf’s remarks underscored the importance of aligning Senegal’s sports sector with global trends to maximize its impact.
He pointed to the growing global recognition of sports as a tool for fostering social and economic inclusion, noting that Senegal could emulate similar models to address youth unemployment.
A Vision for the Future
As the summit unfolds, discussions are expected to center on ways to integrate sports more effectively into Senegal’s economic agenda.
This includes creating pathways for young people to engage with sports not only as athletes but also as entrepreneurs, administrators, and innovators within the industry.
The call for reform reflects a broader vision of sports as a transformative force for development.
With the right policies and investments, Senegal’s sports sector could become a beacon of opportunity, driving economic growth while empowering its youth.
