Hervé Renard Savors Historic AFCON Triumph with Ivory Coast
Hervé Renard is undeniably one of the happiest coaches in world football right now. Less than six months after taking the reins of the Ivory Coast national team, the Frenchman guided the Elephants to glory at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, clinching the title after a dramatic final against Ghana last Sunday in Equatorial Guinea.
Appearing on the French TV show “Téléfoot”, Renard reflected on the emotional journey and the significance of the win:
“With the quality in this team, it was bound to work. I’m really happy because I came for this,” said Renard.
“Before the penalty shootout, I told the players: this time it’s yours, it’s ours. Like in 1992, Ivory Coast will beat Ghana.“
Having already lifted the trophy with Zambia in 2012, Renard becomes the first coach to win the Africa Cup of Nations with two different countries.
“These are just wonderful moments. As I had already experienced it, I simply said: enjoy. After 23 years of waiting, the days that follow are extraordinary.”
A master tactician and motivator, Hervé Renard has now etched his name in African football history—twice.
