CAF set to rule on Senegalese federation president Abdoulaye Fall’s inflammatory comments after AFCON triumph
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is reportedly preparing to issue a disciplinary decision against Abdoulaye Fall, president of the Senegal Football Federation, following inflammatory statements he made during Senegal’s dramatic 1-0 Africa Cup of Nations triumph over Morocco.
Fall appeared before a CAF hearing last Thursday to respond to allegations stemming from his comments, which have drawn widespread attention and criticism across the continent.
The final, decided in extra time, was already mired in controversy. Senegal briefly threatened to withdraw from the match before returning to the field and ultimately securing the title, adding context to Fall’s remarks.
Speaking after the victory, Fall accused Morocco of exercising undue influence over CAF, stating, “Morocco controls the African Football Confederation. Let’s be clear, they control everything and decide everything.”
Fall also highlighted logistical and organizational challenges Senegal faced ahead of the final, including hotel arrangements, ticketing, and refereeing decisions.
“Morocco never thought another team could prevent it from winning the title. No other country opposed Morocco like Senegal did,” he said, underlining his belief that the team faced extraordinary obstacles in securing their victory.
The federation president further addressed the pre-match training controversy, noting that, for logistical reasons, Morocco’s opponents had been using the Mohammed VI Sports Complex for training throughout the tournament.
Senegal, however, refused to train at the same venue as their final opponents and requested to move to an annex at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
Fall also criticized CAF for referee appointments and ticketing arrangements, insisting, “No one dared to stand up to them. Morocco controls CAF. Let’s face the truth – they control everything and decide everything.”
CAF is now expected to weigh these statements against its disciplinary regulations. Sanctions could range from fines to suspension, as the governing body looks to uphold its code of conduct while managing the fallout from one of the tournament’s most contentious post-match incidents.
