With the eagerly anticipated Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 just weeks away, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has issued a stern reminder to the 24 qualified teams regarding crucial provisions that must be adhered to before January 2, 2024.
Scheduled to take place from January 13 to February 11, 2024, in the Ivorian cities of Abidjan, Bouaké, Korhogo,
San Pedro, and Yamoussoukro, AFCON 2023 promises to be a spectacular event.
Three weeks ahead of the competition’s kickoff, CAF has released a press statement emphasizing that the qualified teams have duly submitted the lists of their provisional squads, in accordance with the regulations.
In a significant departure from previous tournaments, the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations CAF Organizing Committee has granted teams the flexibility of selecting a final squad of 27 players, an increase of four from the customary 23.
CAF clarifies that the inclusion of these additional players in the final list is optional, not obligatory.
Teams are reminded that they have until January 2 to finalize and submit their ultimate squads.
Notably, CAF underscores that if a team opts for a squad ranging from 24 to 27 players, only 23 individuals will be eligible for selection in each match during the tournament.
The deadline for the submission of these final teams is January 3, 2023, precisely ten days prior to the opening match.
Furthermore, CAF outlines stringent regulations for player replacements within this timeframe. A player from the final squad can only be substituted in case of a serious injury, occurring not less than 24 hours before the team’s inaugural match, subject to the approval of a medical certificate by the CAF medical committee.
