The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has issued significant financial penalties to two prominent African clubs, CR Belouizdad and AS FAR, following the disruptive behavior of their supporters during recent Champions League matches.
The sanctions reflect CAF’s commitment to upholding discipline and ensuring that all parties involved in African football adhere to the organization’s regulations.
CR Belouizdad, one of Algeria’s top clubs, has been fined $10,000 for the use of smoke bombs and grenades by its supporters during their match against South Africa’s Orlando Pirates.
The pyrotechnic devices, which were set off in the stands, are strictly prohibited under CAF’s safety regulations, highlighting the ongoing security concerns faced by clubs across the continent.
Such incidents not only pose risks to the safety of fans and players but also undermine the integrity of the competition itself.
Meanwhile, Moroccan club AS FAR has been handed a more substantial fine of $15,000 for similar offenses during their encounter with Mamelodi Sundowns.
AS FAR’s supporters are responsible for setting off smoke bombs, resulting in a $5,000 fine, while another $10,000 penalty was imposed for the use of lasers during the match.
The lasers, which were directed onto the pitch, are considered a form of disruption that can affect the concentration of players and officials.
Both fines serve as a stern reminder of the critical role clubs play in educating their supporters about the importance of maintaining a respectful and safe environment during matches.
CAF has repeatedly emphasized the need for strict adherence to regulations regarding crowd control, with the overarching aim of preserving the integrity of the game across the continent.
These sanctions come at a time when African football has been striving to improve its image and ensure that incidents of fan misbehavior are minimized.
By penalizing clubs for the actions of their supporters, CAF aims to send a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated, reinforcing the responsibility that clubs bear in ensuring a safe and respectful atmosphere for all participants in the game.
