CAF Confederation Cup Final: Séwé Sport Takes First Leg Advantage Over Al Ahly
Séwé Sport of Ivory Coast secured a narrow 2-1 victory over Al Ahly Cairo in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup final, giving them a slight edge before the decisive return match in Egypt. Despite their legendary status in African football, this competition remains the only continental title missing from Al Ahly’s prestigious collection.
While Al Ahly were primarily targeting their ninth CAF Champions League title, they now find themselves needing a comeback to avoid missing out on continental silverware altogether this season.
“We faced a good Séwé Sports team. They deserved their victory, but I think the penalty was a bit harsh,” said Al Ahly coach Juan Carlos Garrido.
“That said, nothing is lost for Al Ahly. We’ll play the second leg at home, and I can assure you that we will turn the tide in Cairo.”
Hossam Ghaly, captain of the Egyptian giants, echoed his coach’s determination:
“We lost a battle, not the war. Séwé won a round, but we’ll give everything in Cairo. Al Ahly has a reputation to defend—we will go all the way.”
This will be the fourth meeting between the two teams this year, with the previous encounters ending in a 1-1 draw in Abidjan and a 1-0 win for Al Ahly in Cairo during the group stage. That history gives the Egyptians hope, especially with the second leg set for December 6 in Cairo, where they aim to complete a comeback and claim the CAF Confederation Cup for the first time.
