Confident Al-Ahly Set to Face Nkana in CAF Confederation Cup Opener
Egyptian giants Al-Ahly begin their CAF Confederation Cup campaign this Saturday with a home fixture against Zambia’s Nkana in Group B. The match, held in Cairo, marks the Red Devils’ first outing in the competition following their early exit from the CAF Champions League.
Al-Ahly, one of the most decorated clubs in African football, were relegated to the Confederation Cup after a second-round elimination in the premier continental tournament. Now, under the guidance of new coach Fathi Mabrouk, the Cairo-based side is determined to assert its dominance and reclaim continental glory.
Despite the disappointment of their Champions League exit, Al-Ahly approach this opening match with renewed optimism. “The team’s performance has improved a lot recently, and this is due to the return of the players’ confidence—not necessarily technical reasons, especially since we haven’t had enough time to focus on that yet,” explained Mabrouk.
On paper, Al-Ahly are the clear favourites against Nkana, a side with far less experience at this level. The Egyptians are banking on their home advantage and historical pedigree to secure a strong start in the group stage.
As the Confederation Cup kicks off, all eyes will be on Cairo to see whether Al-Ahly can live up to expectations and set the tone for a successful continental campaign.
