CAF crisis deepens as Patrice Motsepe faces pressure over AFCON final dispute
Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe is reportedly under growing internal pressure to intervene in a brewing dispute involving Morocco and the outcome of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The controversy stems from CAF’s recent decision to strip Senegal of the 2025 AFCON title after the team was deemed to have forfeited the final against Morocco, a ruling that handed the championship to the North African side.
However, the situation has since become more complicated, with conflicting rulings emerging from CAF’s own Disciplinary Board and Appeals Board.
Motsepe acknowledged the disagreement in the decisions, but the matter is now escalating beyond CAF’s internal structures.
Reports indicate that the case could be taken to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), potentially prolonging the dispute and increasing scrutiny on CAF’s leadership.
According to The Guardian, a CAF insider described the situation as one of the most challenging periods of Motsepe’s tenure, suggesting he may have to take decisive and uncomfortable steps to resolve the impasse.
The insider argued that the crisis may not be settled through legal channels alone, and instead requires political and diplomatic intervention.
There are growing calls for Motsepe to encourage Morocco to withdraw its complaint in order to prevent further escalation. However, uncertainty remains over whether Moroccan Football Federation president Fouzi Lekjaa would agree to such a move.
Motsepe has reportedly indicated that CAF will await the ruling of CAS before taking any further action, a stance that has drawn criticism from within the organization.
A former CAF lawyer, speaking anonymously, accused the CAF president of failing to assert authority in the early stages of the dispute, allowing the situation to spiral.
The lawyer suggested that Motsepe’s handling of the issue reflects broader concerns about the stability and credibility of CAF’s governance structures.
As the dispute unfolds, Motsepe faces mounting pressure to restore order and clarity. His response in the coming weeks could prove pivotal, not only for the resolution of the AFCON controversy but also for shaping his legacy as head of African football’s governing body.
