CAF Champions League: We are aiming to qualify in Cairo – Esperance coach Patrice Beaumelle ahead of return leg against Al Ahly
Esperance coach Patrice Beaumelle has praised his team following their narrow 1-0 victory over Al Ahly in the first leg of the CAF Champions League quarterfinals on Sunday at the Rades Stadium.
The French tactician acknowledged the challenge posed by the Egyptian giants, noting that his preparations focused on neutralizing the Red Devils’ experienced squad.
Beaumelle emphasized that while the win is encouraging, the tie remains open ahead of the return leg in Cairo.
“We were looking forward to this match against Al Ahly and managed to score the first goal,” Beaumelle told beIN SPORTS.
“We knew they could keep possession and that they have many quality, experienced players. Our team showed great spirit, though we faced some challenges in the first half. I told the players to increase the pressure, which boosted our energy.”
He added that hesitation during certain attacks required tactical adjustments in the second half, which helped Esperance control the game and capitalize on opportunities, including the penalty that decided the match.
“We performed better in the second half, especially in attacking transitions. The victory is well-deserved, but celebrations will be tempered. The players did well to secure this result,” he said.
Looking ahead, Beaumelle stressed the importance of maintaining focus for the return leg.
“Today we won, but there is still a lot of work to do. We must be brave in Cairo. The second leg will be tough, but we aim to secure victory and advance to the semi-finals.”
The decisive second leg is set for this weekend in Cairo, with kick-off scheduled at 19:00 GMT.
