AS Vita Club Claims Victory Over Zamalek to Lead Group A in African Champions League
AS Vita Club of the DR Congo secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Egypt’s Zamalek on Sunday, putting them at the top of Group A in the 2015 African Champions League. The win followed a 1-0 victory by Sudan’s Al Hilal Omdurman over TP Mazembe, which had already been played on Friday.
The match was played in front of just 5,000 spectators, a subdued turnout due to the recent tragic loss of 15 lives during championship playoffs in the region. Despite the somber atmosphere, AS Vita Club started strongly and took the lead in the first half through a goal by Ndombe Mubele.
Zamalek, however, fought back in the second half, with Zakaria Momen equalizing for the Egyptian side, raising hopes of a comeback. But AS Vita Club quickly regained their advantage, with Emmanuel Ngudikama scoring to secure all three points for his team.
The results on the first matchday of Group A have set the stage for what promises to be a highly competitive group. On the following day, TP Mazembe will face off against AS Vita Club in a highly anticipated Congolese derby, while Zamalek will host Al Hilal in Egypt.
Group A Results:
Al Hilal 1-0 TP Mazembe
AS Vita Club 2-1 Zamalek
The next round of fixtures promises more drama as teams vie for a spot in the knockout stages of Africa’s premier club competition.
