TP Mazembe and AS Vita Club Aim to Hold Group A Leads in African Champions League
This Sunday, Congolese giants Tout Puissant Mazembe and AS Vita Club will look to consolidate their positions atop Group A in the African Champions League group stage. Mazembe currently lead the group with 6 points, closely followed by Vita Club with 4 points. They face tough challenges against Egyptian side Zamalek and Sudanese club Al Hilal respectively.
Mazembe’s trip to Alexandria to face Zamalek promises to be a fiery encounter. The Egyptian club is eager for revenge after feeling aggrieved by the refereeing decisions in the first leg of their clash. The match was marred by controversy, with several Zamalek players sanctioned by CAF for alleged assaults on match officials.
Meanwhile, Vita Club will capitalize on their home advantage as they take on Al Hilal. A victory would either maintain their gap over their Congolese rivals or potentially propel them to the top of the group should Mazembe slip up.
Espérance Tunis Struggles in Group B
In Group B, Algerian club ES Sétif recorded a valuable 2-0 win over Libyan side Al Ahli Benghazi on Friday. Goals from El Hedi Belameiri (18th minute) and Sofiane Younès (90+3) secured the victory for the Algerians, who now top the group with 8 points.
Espérance de Tunis continue to face difficulties, suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to CS Sfaxien. Mohamed Ali Moncer’s 77th-minute goal sealed the win for CS Sfaxien, leaving Espérance languishing near the bottom of the group standings with just 3 points.
