CAF Champions League: Multi-million-dollar Côte d’Or stadium set to host historic La Cure Sylvester, Orlando Pirates clash

Orlando Pirates will begin their latest CAF Champions League campaign at the state-of-the-art Côte d’Or National Sports Complex in Mauritius, where they face La Cure Sylvester in the first leg on Sunday, September 6.

Kick-off is scheduled for 13:30 SAST at a venue that cost approximately R800 million to construct and has established itself as the largest integrated sports and entertainment hub in the Indian Ocean region.

The modern complex provides the infrastructure required for a fixture of this magnitude, giving the Mauritian champions a suitably grand setting for the biggest continental match in the club’s history.

Although La Cure Sylvester are based in Port Louis, their usual home ground does not satisfy the stringent infrastructure, security and pitch standards imposed by CAF for high-profile continental fixtures.

As a result, their historic meeting with the Soweto giants has been moved to the Côte d’Or National Sports Complex in St. Pierre.

The stadium is Mauritius’ premier international multi-sport venue, featuring a high-quality playing surface, modern media facilities and professional amenities for players and teams.

Historic night for La Cure Sylvester

The move represents a major upgrade in surroundings for La Cure Sylvester, who are preparing for their maiden appearance in the CAF Champions League after completing a historic domestic league and cup double.

However, manager Jérôme Thomas is under no illusions about the scale of the challenge awaiting his amateur side.

Pirates boast significantly greater continental experience, squad depth and financial strength, making them overwhelming favourites to progress from the tie.

The Mauritian champions will nevertheless hope their home support and the unpredictability of knockout football can narrow the gap when the two sides meet.

Pirates seek continental redemption

Pirates arrive in Mauritius with confidence after making a strong start to their domestic campaign.

Despite the loss of new signing Ghampani Lungu, the Buccaneers produced an emphatic 4-0 victory over Kruger United in the Betway Premiership on Tuesday, strengthening their position at the top of the early league standings.

The result should provide further momentum for head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, who will be eager to give Pirates control of the tie before the return fixture in Soweto.

For the Sea Robbers, the encounter is also an opportunity to begin their continental campaign strongly after last season ended prematurely.

The return leg will be played on September 12 at the Orlando Amstel Arena, with the aggregate winner advancing to face either AS Mangasport or African Stars in the next round.
