CAF Champions League: Mabasa double inspires Orlando Pirates to commanding win over Lioli FC

Orlando Pirates delivered a dominant second-half performance to defeat Lioli FC 3-0 in the first preliminary round of the CAF Champions League at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

The South African side, who reached last season’s domestic Premiership final, were made to wait before asserting their superiority against the visitors from Lesotho.

With Lioli opting to host the match on South African soil, the tie already felt tilted in Pirates’ favour, but the contest remained goalless at the break after a first half in which the Lesotho side defended with determination and even created a few half-chances.

After the restart, however, the game swung firmly in the Buccaneers’ direction. Tshegofatso Mabasa broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute, rising highest to glance home a header from a Deon Hotto corner.

Just three minutes later, the forward doubled his tally, latching onto an incisive pass from Relebohile Mofokeng before slotting calmly past the Lioli goalkeeper.

The double strike shifted the momentum decisively, forcing Lioli to chase the game and leaving spaces at the back.

Pirates, who grew increasingly confident as the minutes passed, pushed forward relentlessly in search of a third goal to put the tie beyond doubt.

That moment arrived in the closing stages when Oswin Appollis unleashed a stunning effort that flew into the top corner, completing a convincing scoreline.

For Lioli, the result was harsh but reflected the gulf in experience and quality between the two sides. Their spirited defensive effort in the first half ultimately could not withstand the sustained pressure of the South Africans, who capitalised clinically on their opportunities once the breakthrough had been made.

Pirates’ head coach will be encouraged not only by Mabasa’s clinical finishing but also by the team’s composure in managing the game after their slow start.

The win provides them with a significant advantage ahead of next Saturday’s return leg at Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg, where they will be overwhelming favourites to confirm their progression.

Lioli, meanwhile, face a daunting challenge. To overturn the deficit, they would need to score at least three goals away from home without conceding, a task that looks improbable given Pirates’ attacking form and defensive resilience.

Nonetheless, the Lesotho side will be determined to salvage pride and push their illustrious opponents as far as possible in the second meeting.

The result underlines Orlando Pirates’ status as one of the competition’s heavyweights in the early rounds, and with momentum already on their side, the Buccaneers have taken a confident first step in their quest for continental success.
