CAF Champions League first legs: Away victories leave several clubs in control

Pyramids FC and TP Mazembe made strong starts in the CAF Champions League first preliminary round, winning away from home against Gor Mahia and Medeama respectively. Petro Atletico, Simba SC and Orlando Pirates also secured positive results on the road as the first-leg matches concluded on Sunday.

Pyramids FC produced one of the most notable results of the round with a 2-0 victory at Gor Mahia. TP Mazembe took a 1-0 lead back from Medeama, while Petro Atletico defeated UD Songo by the same scoreline.

Simba SC also earned a 1-0 away win against Mighty Wanderers, while Orlando Pirates drew 0-0 at La Cure Waves. The result leaves those clubs well placed before the return fixtures, which will be played between 11 and 13 September.

Club Africain claimed a narrow 1-0 home victory over Djoliba AC. Al-Hilal Omdurman beat Aigle Noir 2-0, and Zamalek won 2-1 away to AS Port.

ASCK and ASEC Mimosas shared a 1-1 draw in Lome, while Gaborone United and Young Africans also ended level at 1-1. San Pedro were held 1-1 by Rivers United, and Vipers drew 1-1 with Nouadhibou.

Several other clubs established a lead on home soil. Wiliete recorded the biggest win of the round by beating Foresters 4-0, while MangaSport defeated African Stars 3-1. CFFA overcame Lijabatho 2-0, and Aigles du Congo, JS Saoura, Al-Merreikh, El Merriekh Bentiu, Club Africain and Scottland FC all claimed one-goal victories.

There were goalless draws between Aiglons and Sidama Bunna, Star Sport Academy and Medina United, Colombe and Stade Malien, and Nigelec and MC Alger.

Two matches were postponed: Maghreb de Fes against Rahimo FC and 15 de Agosto against Fomboni.
