CAF Champions League: CAF mulls possible sanctions after fan disorder in Espérance vs Sundowns clash
Espérance de Tunis could be facing disciplinary action from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following reported incidents during their CAF Champions League semi-final first leg against Mamelodi Sundowns.
Sundowns hold a 1–0 aggregate advantage heading into the return leg in Pretoria after Brayan Leon’s decisive strike gave the South African side the edge in a tightly contested encounter.
However, the match was overshadowed by crowd trouble, with sections of Espérance supporters reportedly reacting angrily to decisions made by Algerian referee Mustapha Ghorbal.
According to reports from YSScores.com, objects were allegedly thrown onto the pitch as frustration boiled over following repeated warnings to fans about their conduct.
The Tunisian club are no strangers to disciplinary scrutiny, having previously been fined $15,000 (around R245,000) by CAF for the use of fireworks during a continental fixture.
CAF is understood to have warned that continued misconduct could attract harsher punishment, including matches being played behind closed doors, relocation of home fixtures, or increased financial sanctions.
It remains unclear whether formal action will be taken, but the governing body is expected to review the incident as part of its post-match disciplinary assessment.
