Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Patrice Motsepe has reportedly stepped up efforts to launch the proposed African Nations League, a new senior men’s international competition involving all 54 member associations.

According to reports, Motsepe has accelerated work on the tournament, which was first unveiled in December 2025 as part of CAF’s plans to expand international football on the continent.

The competition is being developed in collaboration with FIFA and is expected to provide a significant financial boost for African football. Under the proposal, each of CAF’s 54 member associations would receive $1m annually through the competition.

Egyptian outlet WinWin reports that Motsepe recently convened an emergency meeting to fast-track preparations for the tournament.

The report says CAF has established a committee to finalise the competition’s format and oversee the next phase of planning.

The committee’s immediate priorities include designing the tournament structure, setting a timetable for its introduction and ensuring it can be accommodated within the existing CAF and FIFA international calendars.

CAF has not yet announced a launch date for the African Nations League or confirmed the competition’s final format.
