Burundi’s national team, led by coach Etienne Ndayiragije, has arrived in Lomé, providing insights into the state of the team and sharing his perspectives on Algeria’s prospects in the upcoming AFCON in Ivory Coast.
Upon his arrival in Lomé, Coach Ndayiragije, in an interview with Africa Foot United, expressed the challenges and expectations surrounding the team’s preparations for the friendly match against Algeria.
“At the moment, it’s difficult. They just arrived. It is this evening after the clean-up that I will be able to say more, because many are new to the group,” he noted.
The coach emphasized the significance of the match in fostering cohesion and providing an opportunity to assess the performance of new players, bringing a sense of freshness to the team.
Addressing the team’s recent performances, including a defeat against Cameroon and victories in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Ndayiragije highlighted the evolving nature of the Burundi team.
He expressed optimism about witnessing an improved performance, emphasizing the learning curve for the young team.
When questioned about facing Algeria, Ndayiragije acknowledged familiarity with the Algerian squad, citing their recent match against the local Togo team.
He shared his intention to address specific aspects of their play to present a formidable challenge.
Regarding Algeria’s training camp in Lomé, Ndayiragije commented, “I think they calculated well, since it is the same climate as Ivory Coast.
If they came here, good for them. This will help them acclimatize for the future.”
On the subject of Algeria being the favorites for the AFCON, Ndayiragije remained diplomatic, stating, “Yes, but everyone is a favorite.
All teams are at zero points and zero games at the moment. It’s the one who plays his cards right who will come out on top. You have to win matches to prove it.”
