Burkinabe winger Georgi Minoungou scores for Seattle Sounders but defeat follows late
Georgi Minoungou found the net for Seattle Sounders in their Major League Soccer clash against Austin, but his contribution was not enough to prevent a narrow 2-1 defeat after a dramatic stoppage-time winner for the hosts.
The Burkinabe winger, who has enjoyed a bright start to his spell in the United States, once again showcased his attacking qualities in front of goal.
Despite Seattle falling behind in the first half, Minoungou restored parity shortly after the restart with a well-taken finish that highlighted both his anticipation and clinical edge.
Seattle had entered the contest looking to regain momentum in their campaign, yet the opening stages proved difficult. Austin applied sustained pressure and were rewarded midway through the first period, breaking the deadlock and sending the home crowd into celebration
. The Sounders attempted to respond, but their final ball lacked sharpness, and they went into the interval trailing by a single goal.
Manager Brian Schmetzer made tactical adjustments at the break, encouraging his side to push forward with greater urgency.
Just moments into the second half, those changes bore fruit. Cristian Roldan surged down the right wing and delivered a precise cross into the penalty area.
Minoungou timed his run to perfection, darting between defenders before meeting the ball with a deft touch that guided it beyond the Austin goalkeeper. His 46th-minute equaliser provided Seattle with renewed belief and silenced the home supporters.
The goal marked another important milestone for the 22-year-old Burkinabe, who has been in impressive form in recent weeks.
His pace, direct dribbling, and ability to exploit spaces in behind defenders have quickly made him a key weapon in the Sounders’ attacking set-up.
For Minoungou personally, the strike further strengthens his case as one of the rising African talents making an impact in MLS.
Following the equaliser, Seattle sought to build on their momentum. The visitors enjoyed spells of possession and carved out half-chances but could not find the accuracy needed to turn dominance into a decisive lead.
Austin, however, remained resilient and looked dangerous on the counter-attack, forcing the Sounders to remain wary at the back.
As the match edged toward its conclusion, the contest appeared destined for a share of the spoils. Yet in the dying moments of added time, Austin delivered a cruel blow.
Deep into stoppage time, in the 96th minute, the home side capitalised on a lapse in concentration from the Sounders’ defence. A quick exchange of passes created space inside the penalty area, and the final shot left the Seattle goalkeeper helpless as it rippled the net for a 2-1 victory.
The late strike was a bitter setback for Seattle, who had battled hard to claw their way back into the game. For all Minoungou’s efforts, his equaliser ultimately counted for little in the final outcome.
The Sounders must now regroup quickly as the season enters a crucial phase, with points becoming increasingly vital in the push for playoff positions.
Despite the defeat, Minoungou’s performance stood out as a positive. His instinctive finish and relentless running troubled the Austin defence throughout, underlining his growing importance to the squad.
While the Sounders left empty-handed, the Burkinabe international’s progress continues to provide encouragement for both club and country.
Seattle will hope to translate such individual brilliance into collective success in upcoming fixtures, but for Minoungou, the night was further evidence that he is settling into life in MLS with confidence and determination.
