Burkina Faso’s mixed international window brings four points and Argentina controversy

Burkina Faso took four points from their opening two Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) 2027 qualifying matches under Amir Abdou, but their international window was overshadowed by the decision to withdraw from a friendly against Argentina.

The Stallions began their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Benin at the Stade du 4-Aout in Ouagadougou on 25 September 2026. Franck Lassina Traore put Burkina Faso ahead from the penalty spot in the 20th minute, before Tosin levelled for Benin with another penalty in the 68th minute.

Three days later, Burkina Faso secured their first win of the campaign by beating the Central African Republic 1-0 in Casablanca. Aboubacar Sidiki Camara scored the decisive goal shortly after coming on as a substitute.

The team’s proposed trip to Argentina became the most contentious episode of the international break. Following several flight-related problems and a journey estimated to have taken 14 hours, Burkina Faso decided not to play the match.

The decision was made with the risk of injuries and the limited time available for recovery among the factors cited. Burkina Faso’s under-23 side, who were in camp in Ouagadougou, took their place instead and lost 7-0 to Argentina.

Group F standings

According to the standings released, Burkina Faso have four points in Group F of the CAN 2027 qualifiers, level with Benin. Mauritania are on three points, while the Central African Republic have yet to collect a point.

The Stallions will return to qualifying action in November for a two-legged meeting with Mauritania.
