Burkina Faso Football Federation has taken the decision not to renew the contract of national team head coach Hubert Velud, which comes on the heels of their Africa Cup of Nations last-16 exit.
Despite finishing second in the group behind Angola but ahead of top-seeded Algeria, Burkina Faso was eliminated by Mali in the knockout round following a 2-1 defeat.
Velud, a 64-year-old Frenchman, had a tumultuous history, notably being shot in the arm during an attack on the Togo team bus in 2010, forcing him and the team to withdraw from the tournament.
He will leave the Stallions along with his staff when their contracts expire in April this year.
Velud, who made a belated appearance on the bench at this 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, had previously led Sudan to the finals in Cameroon two years ago but was dismissed before the kick-off due to a subpar performance at the 2021 Arab Cup in Qatar.
He now joins a growing list of coaches who have departed after the Ivory Coast tournament, including Djamel Belmadi (Algeria), Rui Vitoria (Egypt), Tom Saintfiet (Gambia), Chris Hughton (Ghana), Baciro Cande (Guinea Bissau), Jean-Louis Gasset (Ivory Coast), Adel Amrouche (Tanzania), and Jalel Kadri (Tunisia).
