Burkina Faso new coach Amir Abdou targets top EIGHT spot in Africa

Comorian tactician Amir Abdou has set sights on steering the Burkina Faso national team into the top eight Africa teams following his unveiling on Thursday, March 5, 2026.

The 47-year-old tactician replaces Brama Traore following the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations tournament, held in Morocco early this year.

Abdou penned a two-year deal to lead the team in this transformative period. Meanwhile, the Burkina Faso Football Federation has tasked Abdou with rebuilding the squad, securing strong performances in the next Africa Cup of Nations, and propelling the Etalons into the top 10 of African football

Following his unveiling in Ouagadougou, Amir Abdou has expressed his admiration for the squad, highlighting its history of strong performances and the wealth of talent within the team.

“Burkina Faso is a great football nation. The team has already reached the semi-finals several times in Africa, and there are many quality players. The goals may be ambitious, but anything is possible,” Abdou said. “I discussed this with the president of the FBF: with the quality of its players, this team should be among the top eight in Africa.”

Abdou also emphasized the importance of blending local talent with players of dual nationality and those leaving the domestic league to play abroad. “The people are demanding. They need results. I am a competitor, and I will give my all to ensure that the people are satisfied,” he added.

With Abdou at the helm, Burkina Faso aims to combine strategic planning with talent development to cement its place among the continent’s footballing powerhouses, aiming not just for participation, but for real competitive success.
