The Hirondelles de Fada N’Gourma women’s football team was involved in a road accident while returning from a league match in Ouagadougou, the Burkinabe Football Federation has confirmed.

The incident occurred after the team’s 17th round Women’s Ligue 1 match against USFA, which ended in a 7-0 defeat for Hirondelles.

The federation stated that the team’s bus was struck by a truck in Nagréongo on the journey back to Fada N’Gourma.

“The Burkinabe Football Federation informs the public that the Hirondelles FC team from Fada was involved in a traffic accident in Nagréongo, while returning to Fada N’Gourma after their trip to Ouagadougou.

The club was playing USFA there in the 17th round of the Women’s Ligue 1,” the statement read.

Five players sustained minor injuries and were promptly taken to the Nagréongo health centre, where they received medical care.

Following treatment, the delegation was able to continue their journey safely to Fada N’Gourma.

The federation did not provide further details on the truck involved, but emphasised that all injured players were treated and are recovering.

Officials highlighted that the team’s safety remains a priority and are reviewing travel arrangements for future matches.

This accident follows Hirondelles’ heavy defeat in Ouagadougou, marking a difficult day for the club both on and off the pitch. The team is expected to regroup and prepare for upcoming fixtures in Burkina Faso’s national women’s first division championship.

The incident has prompted renewed attention on road safety measures for football teams travelling across the country, especially during long-distance trips for league matches.
