The Burkina Faso Football Federation (FBF) has categorically denied allegations that Alban Lafont, the French-born goalkeeper for FC Nantes, requested financial compensation to join the country’s national team.
In a press release dated 9 December 2024, the FBF dismissed the rumors, describing them as “unfounded” and lamented their impact on the reputations of the federation, the player, and his family.
The federation’s statement comes after reports circulated, particularly from the publication Sidwaya, suggesting that Lafont had made financial demands as a condition for representing Burkina Faso.
The FBF strongly refuted these claims, emphasizing that selections are made based on sporting merit, not financial arrangements.
No one is unaware of the qualities of this player who could be called up by the FBF, like any other dual-national player to defend the colours of Burkina Faso,” the statement read.
FBF President Oumarou Sawadogo also reiterated the organization’s commitment to building a competitive national team.
He called on the public and media to refrain from spreading baseless rumors that could harm the federation’s image.
The press release stressed that the national team remains open to all players of Burkinabe descent or dual nationality who can contribute to its success.
It underlined that Alban Lafont had never made any monetary demands to join the Stallions, nor had the FBF made financial incentives a condition for his inclusion.
Convinced that the Burkina Faso national team remains open to any Burkinabe capable of bringing added value in the defense of the star-spangled banner, the FBF reserves the right to follow and establish, if necessary, contact with all talented footballers who meet the conditions for selection with the Stallions, the statement continued.
The FBF expressed frustration over what it described as speculative reporting that tarnishes its mission and the credibility of its efforts to recruit high-caliber players.
President Sawadogo affirmed that the federation will maintain transparency in its dealings and continue to uphold the integrity of its selection process.
This firm rebuttal seeks to end the controversy surrounding Lafont, ensuring that focus remains on the federation’s goal of strengthening Burkina Faso’s national football team through unity and talent.
